Why a Better Physician Experience Ultimately Results in a Better Patient Experience

Interview with: Dr Denise Brown, Chief Strategy Officer, CEP America

“The joy of practicing medicine has disappeared for many physicians,” according to Dr Denise Brown, Chief Strategy Officer, CEP America. “Doctors are demoralized and patients can tell. At the center of all efforts to provide care, there must be a group of engaged and aligned physicians. We have brilliant innovations and technolo-gies available in healthcare, but what needs more emphasis is the physician leadership piece,” she highlights.

CEP America is a solution provider at the marcus evans National Health-care CXO Summit Fall 2016, in Los Angeles, California, October 16-18.

How can hospitals deliver better care at the cost structure that Medicare can pay for? How can they engaged and align physicians?
If medicine is going to be practiced cost-effectively, we have to bring back "the sacred interaction between physicians and patients." That therapeutic relationship seems lost to many physicians and their patients.

Our goal is to re-engage patients and their physicians in their care. Physician engagement is challenging because like many professionals, doctors are busy people. We have to find those right people and invest in them. While many hospital systems have been focused on decreasing physician spend, they need to realize physicians are one of their most precious resources. It‟s the engaged therapeutic relationship between physicians, nurses and patients that can truly achieve the Triple Aim.

Our physician partnership is founded upon delivering three components to our hospital clients: leadership, alignment and engagement. By focusing on these components, we deliver more cost effective, integrated care.

Tell us how the physician experience can improve.
Patients sense when physicians are demoralized or burned out. To improve the overall patient experience we must also improve the physician experience - through the use of scribes, advanced practitioners, technology. Let us remove the Electronic Health Record (EHR) as the focus of the physician-patient interaction, and go with old-school face-to-face communication.

The EHR has not been all that we hoped it would be. Physicians are overwhelmed with all the work involved and some are even leaving the profession.

The alternative approach to improving the patient experience is to consider how the physician experience can improve; to provide physicians the tools they need to have some breathing room, so they can focus on what is really important; the sacred therapeutic relationship between physician and patient.

Together we can restore the “joy of medicine,” reinvigorating both physicians and hospitals alike. And together we can come up with creative solutions that will make healthcare delivery more effective for everyone.

As the reimbursement environment continues to change, what strate-gies, processes or steps should hospitals adopt or take?
All contracts should contain perform-ance-based elements. The most successful hospital-physician partner-ships share both risk and reward. Bundled Payments for Care Improve-ment (BPCI) is rewarding for hospitals, clinicians, and patients.

What trends or changes do you see for the future? How can hospitals prepare?
As more care is delivered outside hospital walls, the importance of aligned physician relationships increases. To grow market share, go outside the wall. To keep that market share, work to continue alignment based on risk and reward.
