Collaboration between hospitalists and emergency physicians can be challenging due to a conflict of interest that can arise based on the different priorities they must manage. However, the way in which these two departments work together can have significant consequences to patient care metrics throughout the hospital. The inherent tensions between hospitalists and emergency physicians exist because of the vastly different pressures they face regarding differing time demands on each and the process issues that result.
Understanding the nature of these tensions and examining recent solutions shed light on how they can more effectively collaborate and also stimulate ideas for improvement. The current healthcare landscape continues to push integration within hospitals. As hospitalists and emergency physicians refine how they work together, a critical segment within the healthcare ecosystem is adapting rapidly to meet the needs of the future.
