Jaime Rivas, MD, FACEP, Chairman of the Board was elected as CEP America's Chairman of the Board of Directors in January 2011. He earned a Baccalaureate in Physiology at the University of California, San Diego and attended medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where he graduated with the honor of Excellence in Emergency Medicine. Since joining CEP America in 1996, he has served in numerous leadership roles including as Assistant Medical Director at Inland Valley Hospital, start-up Medical Director at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley, California beginning in 1999, and since 2003 as Medical Director at both at both Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, California, and Pomerado Hospital in Poway, California. Dr. Rivas was the recipient of CEP America's San Diego Regional Physician of the Year award in 2000. Dr. Rivas has been a member of the CEP America Board of Directors since 2002, when he was elected as one of the youngest Board Members in CEP America history.
Jeff Arnold, MD, FACEP, FAAEM has been with CEP America since 2005. He attended Stanford University School of Medicine, completed his Residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and is ABEM Board Certified in emergency medicine. Since 1996, he has given lectures at various universities and conferences in 20 countries throughout Africa, East Asia/Oceana, Europe, Middle East, and North America and has published more than 50 papers on emergency medicine and disaster medicine topics. In addition to being the latest addition to the CEP America Board of Directors, he is also the Medical Director at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. Before working at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Dr. Arnold was the Medical Director and later Chief Medical Officer at Natividad Medical Center in Central California. At Santa Clara Valley Medical Center he continues to involve himself in the hospital community as the Co-Chairman of the Emergency Performance Improvement Committee and the Chairman of the STEMI Quality Improvement Committee.
Charles Deng, MD, FACEP joined CEP America in 1994 and is a Senior Partner. Dr. Deng earned his bachelor of science from the University of California, Irvine. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California and went on to complete an internship and residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Southern California Medical Center. Dr. Deng is an American Board of Emergency Medicine Diplomate and an American College of Emergency Physicians fellow. Currently, Dr. Deng practices at El Camino Hospital and Palomar Medical Center.
Wesley Fields, MD, FACEP graduated from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara and earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California. He joined CEP America after training in Emergency Medicine at Harbor/UCLA and has practiced at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills since 1983. A member of the clinical faculty at UC Irvine, Dr. Fields has written and lectured widely on medical informatics, practice management, and healthcare policy. He is a reviewer for Health Affairs and the Annals of Emergency Medicine and recently published his second novel. A Past President of CAL/ACEP, he continues to chair EMPAC in California and is active on the board of NEMPAC. He has won the Ken Maddy Advocacy Award and Walter Edwards Meritorious Service Award from CAL/ACEP, the Master Clinician and Distinguished Service Award from CEP America, and was named a Hero with Heart by the Trauma Intervention Program. He is the longest serving member of the CEP America Board of Directors, including three years as the chairman.
Howard Friedman, MD, FACEP joined CEP America in 1982 and is a staff physician in the emergency department at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Friedman is former Chairman of the Credentials and Partner Affairs Committee (CPAC), having served in that role from 2001 - 2005 after being an active CPAC member since 1998. Dr. Friedman is also the Chairman of the CEP America Compliance Committee and has served on the committee since 2000. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, studied Physiology at the University of Southern California (USC), and earned his medical degree from the USC School of Medicine. Dr. Friedman completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, where he was the Chief Resident. Dr. Friedman is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and an American College of Emergency Medicine Fellow.
Theo Koury, MD, FACEP has been a CEP America Partner since 1997, serving on the Board of Directors and as an Associate Vice President. Dr. Koury previously acted as the first chairman of CEP America's New Partner Committee. He serves on various hospital-based committees including chairman of the Emergency Department Performance Improvement Committee and chairman of the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee. He attended the University of Southern California, where he obtained his bachelor's in Biology, and earned his medical degree at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Koury completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as Chief Resident and received the John P. McDade Award for "Research in Emergency Medical Care." He is an American College of Emergency Physicians Fellow.
Joel A. Stettner, MD, FACEP is a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and has been a Partner since 1978. He served on the CEP America Board of Directors in the early 1980s, was the group's Managing Partner from 1981 to 1998, and President of MedAmerica from 1981 to 1997. Dr. Stettner returned to the CEP America Board and served as Chairman from 2006 through 2010. He is a Past President of CAL/ACEP and has held a number of committee positions with national ACEP. Dr. Stettner earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Doctorate of Medicine from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He completed a rotating internship and a residency in Internal Medicine at Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Oakland, California. Currently, Dr. Stettner practices at the Alameda Hospital Emergency Care Center. He is a founding faculty member of the CEP America Medical Directors Academy; and in 2005, received CEP America's Stewardship Award.
Imamu Tomlinson, MD joined CEP America in 2004. He received his bachelor of science in Biology from St. Lawrence University in New York and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He completed his residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Ohio and is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Tomlinson has served as the Medical Director at Adventist Medical Center Selma since 2006, and served as the Medical Director at Adventist Medical Center Hanford from 2006 to 2011. Dr. Tomlinson was the Mid Valley Emergency Nursing Association Emergency Physician of the Year in 2006 and received a CEP America distinguished service award in 2008. In 2009, both Hanford and Selma received CEP America site of the year distinctions. Dr. Tomlinson has been an active member of the Hospital Medical Executive Committee. He led an effort to create the Department of Emergency and Diagnostic Medicine and currently serves as the chair of that department. As a result of his leadership, both medical centers have increased their volume by more than 90% and only 0.5% of patients leave prior to seeing a medical provider.
Barbara Victor, MD, FACEP joined the CEP America Partnership in 1999 and has held medical directorships in the emergency departments of Martin Luther King Jr. - Harbor Medical Center, Garden Grove Hospital and California Hospital. She completed her nursing degree at Harbor College, and practiced as a nurse for eight years in the Emergency Department at Harbor / UCLA Medical Center. She then went on to pursue her Bachelor of Arts in Biology at California State University, Long Beach. After much encouragement from her colleagues, Dr. Victor applied to medical school and attended Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. She completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Loma Linda University. Dr. Victor is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Today, Dr. Victor is the Regional Director for the Orange County region. She is recognized as a provider of "Excellence in Community Service" from the City of Garden Grove. She participates on the CEP America Compensation Committee and is a member of the Board of Directors.
